No one is born perfect, so we all have a story of how and when God’s redemption became our own story. There is a good rationale behind how and when to share yours.

Cruising down an Australian highway, the kangaroo that crashed into my Range Rover didn’t just cause a wreck—it mirrored my life before Christ. At 21, I was drowning in alcohol and drugs, running from childhood abuse and abandonment. That crash was a wake-up call, but it took God’s grace to turn my mess into a ministry.

As a pastor, I’ve learned that sharing my redemption story fuels my leadership and inspires others to trust Jesus. Let me tell you how my journey can help you lead authentically.

Growing up, I faced sexual abuse and abandonment, wounds that drove me to numb the pain with substances. A high-speed car crash nearly ended it all, but God had a plan.

On Christmas Eve, drunk and broken, I wandered into a Catholic church. The warmth of the people and a sermon about Jesus hit my soul, leading me to surrender to Christ. That night sparked a transformation that took me from addiction to planting churches and coaching leaders worldwide.

Sharing my story wasn’t easy at first—I feared judgment—but it changed everything at my church called ShireLive. When I opened up about my past, people connected, seeing God’s power in my weakness. As 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My power is made perfect in weakness.”

Your story, whether dramatic or quiet, shows that no one is beyond God’s reach. Vulnerability invites others to experience His love.

To share effectively, craft a concise version of your story—five minutes, focusing on your struggle, God’s grace, and your transformation. Practice it to share in sermons or one-on-one, keeping it honest but not graphic, always pointing to Jesus’ forgiveness.

I also encourage my congregants to share their stories in small groups, building community.

My openness led to salvations as people saw hope in my redemption. I’ve coached pastors who’ve done the same, seeing trust deepen and churches grow.

Write down your redemption story—your before, your encounter with Christ, your now. Share it with your team or in your next sermon. Don’t hide your scars; they’re proof of God’s grace. Let your story ignite faith and make a kingdom impact.
